HealthCorps works on the grassroots level in schools and communities but also believes its advocacy efforts are needed to assist in moving America to the “tipping point” of wellness. Our Advocacy Efforts are currently focused on:
- Policy shifts that put health education and physical education back into the core curriculum for the American education system;
- Policy shifts that move us towards safer environments affecting health (food systems, transportation systems, public space design systems, more nature) that encourage and enable people to be more physically active.
The FitKids Act
The Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (FIT Kids) is designed to help make quality physical education a priority in our schools. Please go to www.fitkidsact.org for more information to support this cause. (Note, this legislation will likely be reintroduced in the 113th Congress).
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
ESEA is the nation’s federal education law, HealthCorps has joined a coalition of like-minded organizations to ask that Health Education and Physical Education be elevated to “core subjects” or enjoy the same flexibility of federal funding as other subjects. To see letters to lawmakers please go here. (Note this legislation will likely be reintroduced in the 113th Congress).
